Local film fest fans need not fret. The Port Townsend Women and Film Festival this spring and the Port Townsend Film Festival this fall are back on track, albeit in virtual form.
The Women and Film Festival for 2020 is slated to run virtually from May 28 through June 7, while the 21st annual Port Townsend Film Festival will take place virtually this September.
The Women and Film Festival will stream through ptfilmfest.com for free as a gift to the community, according to KC Upshaw, festival development and promotion coordinator.
“In the midst of this hurricane we call COVID-19, the Port Townsend Film Festival is devoted to protecting our most precious asset — our community,” she said. “For 20 years, our film festival has served storytellers, actors and film lovers by hosting nothing short of a community miracle, made possible by our brilliant and devoted patrons, sponsors and donors.”
Upshaw said film festival organizers were keeping the community’s health and safety in mind when they decided the fall film festival would not be hosted live in eight theaters and throughout restaurants and streets of Port Townsend.
“With every unexpected change comes a birth of new ideas and creation,” Upshaw said. “With this sentiment, we are excited to announce a new way for us to connect filmmakers and audiences.”
The 2020 Virtual Women and Film Festival will bring audiences a carefully curated collection of films made by “brave and bold” female filmmakers and subjects. It is made possible through sponsors including Kitsap Bank, KCTS 9, Caroline Littlefield and Holley Carlson Real Estate, whose gifts will allow viewers to stream the entire virtual festival free of charge.
The festival will include six full-length features and four short films, all available throughout the 10-day period.
Keeping in line with the organization’s mission to “spark community by connecting filmmakers and audiences,” the festival will introduce the filmmakers to audiences prior to their films whenever possible, with pre-recorded introductions so viewers might learn a bit about each creator.
The Port Townsend Film Festival looks forward to sharing more information on its virtual fall festival in the coming months.
