Warrant results in arrest of alleged burglar

A Shelton man accused of a cabin break-in near Brinnon is back in Jefferson County Jail awaiting a new court hearing.

Benjamin Richard Tweed, 34, appeared in Jefferson County Superior Court for the first time Monday since his release on his own personal recognizance in March.

Tweed was released from custody on the promise that he appear at his felony arraignment March 30.

Tweed was a no-show, however, and a $5,000 bond was issued for his arrest. He was taken into custody Friday night and booked into Jefferson County Jail.

At a short hearing Monday, Judge Brandon Mack noted that Tweed was also wanted on an active warrant in Mason County.

Mack granted the request from prosecutors to keep Tweed in custody on $5,000 bail.

Tweed will appear in Jefferson County Superior Court at a status hearing scheduled for Friday, July 14.

Tweed’s legal troubles in Jefferson County date back to March 21, after a woman went to check on a neighbor’s cabin on US Highway 101 near McDonald Cove south of Brinnon and found signs of a break-in.

While the woman was walking on a trail near her neighbor’s property, she noticed a door to the cabin had been left open.

The neighbor soon realized that two cabins on the property had been burglarized. She then saw another woman nearby, climbing up a steep bank toward US 101.

The neighbor shouted at the woman, who ignored her and kept going. The neighbor then saw a vehicle perched on the steep driveway that was stuck, with two men nearby who were yelling at each other.

Numerous items from the cabin were scattered in the driveway. When one of the men saw the neighbor at the bottom of the embankment, he started running toward her, according to court documents.

Fearing for her safety, the woman ran home and called the sheriff’s office.

Deputies responded and found a man and woman walking along US 101 about a half-mile from the cabins. When deputies searched the bag that Tweed had been carrying, items were found that had been stolen from the cabin.

The pair, later identified as Tweed and Mandy Marie York, 40, were arrested and charged with residential burglary and third-degree theft.

York’s trial was earlier set for Sept. 11.

Tweed has a criminal record in Mason County, Olympia, and Yakima, including a prior conviction for burglary, according to court documents.
