Is August always this fun? The opportunities for entertainment exceed the needs of all but the most discontented sourpuss. Heck, they even exceed the indictments delivered to our former president.

Last weekend the Ludlow Maintenance Commission (LMC), or “North Bay,” invited the whole Port Ludlow community, including the neighbors in the South Bay, to a BBQ at the Beach Club. Around 250 folks showed up to enjoy a pulled pork sandwich, cheeseburger, or both on a superb afternoon on the hill above Ludlow Bay. Billy Fong again managed the 1960s music playing from the deck while Allan Kiesler, Karen Davis, Kim Bond, and many more worked to assure a great afternoon for the community. They probably even managed to make the weather close to perfect.

This Thursday afternoon the Sound Advice Band will be performing on the Beach Club lawn from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Before dancing to some music from the 1960s and 1970s your parents told you about, you can also enjoy a nutritious hot dog probably acquired from Costco’s health food department. I will not be able to attend the full concert given the rigorous scheduling of my bi-weekly poker game that evening, but BJ will adequately fulfill my obligations.

Saturday is the Kiwanis Club Car Show at Memorial Field in Port Townsend. You can see cars, trucks and motorcycles of all vintages through 2003. 70 years of Corvettes and 100 years of Triumphs will be celebrated. There will be many examples of cars you probably thought didn’t exist anymore and without the love, care and money lavished on these units, they really don’t deserve to exist. I speak from a position of misguided experience as do many of my friends.

In spite of her requests to the contrary, there was a celebration of life for the recently passed 99-year-old Eve McDougall. Given the crowd of folks filling the Bay View room at the Beach Club who testified to her spirit, she clearly misunderstood the impact she had on the community. Folks testified to her friendliness, generosity, classy style and much more. She had been a member of the Port Ludlow Singers, so they performed several of Eve’s favorites during the celebration. I have always maintained that I would want a party with appropriate songs from the 1960s to celebrate my trip to wherever but it seems the way to guarantee it is to demand there be no celebration! Rest in peace, Eve!

Please note that the Port Ludlow Village Council (PLVC) needs a new treasurer. It doesn’t sound like it is a big job since, well, they don’t have much money. The PLVC provides needed coordination and representation for the community and is always welcoming of volunteer help. Let Dave McDermid know at info@plvc.org if you can help this valuable organization. Dave says that the new treasurer will get 50 percent more money than retiring Chuck Hinton. If you understand that means you will still get a pat on the back and a “well done” with no money, you qualify for the job! The PLVC entertainment will last far beyond August.
