Lorna Smith has been appointed by Gov. Jay Inslee to Washington’s Fish and Wildlife Commission.

Smith’s term will run from Jan. 4 through Dec. 31, 2026.

Also appointed to the commission at the start of the year, was Fred Koontz of King County.

Smith was a candidate last year for the Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners.

A Cape George resident since 2012, Smith has served on the Jefferson County Planning Commission and as executive director for the Western Wildlife Outreach. Prior to moving to Jefferson County, she worked as a land use and environmental planner for Snohomish County.

The Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission consists of nine members appointed by the governor to set policy for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“I thank Gov. Inslee for providing me this opportunity to serve Washingtonians and Washington’s wildlife in this role,” Smith said. “The agency’s work is near and dear to my heart and I’m excited, honored, and humbled to join the commission.”

There are three outgoing commission members in this year are Robert Kehoe of King County, David Graybill of Chelan County and Dr. Brad Smith of Whatcom County.

Commission appointees are subject to confirmation by the state Senate. However, members are official upon appointment and serve as voting members on the commission while awaiting Senate confirmation.
