Port Townsend and Chimacum high schools are looking at participating in a cooperative program in five sports for the coming school year.
Student athletes participate in sports managed by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association, and there are typically 50 or so cooperative programs between schools every year.
Under a cooperative program, students from more than one WIAA-member school share resources, but compete as representatives of their own schools in individual sports and activities.
Port Townsend High School is classified as a 1A school, while Chimacum High School, which has fewer students, is a 2B school.
If approved, the two schools would enter the coming school year as a co-op program in boys and girls cross country, girls swimming and diving, boys and girls wrestling, boys and girls tennis, and boys soccer.
Chimacum Superintendent Rick Thompson said the two schools have a history of cooperation in sports for both boys and girls.
He also noted that small schools can provide more opportunities by cooperating and sharing resources.
