Rescued bald eagle goes under for surgery in Chimacum

An injured bald eagle recently underwent surgery at the Port Hadlock Veterinary Clinic.

The eagle was found in Belfair in May, unable to fly and on the ground in distress. The bird was apparently injured for more than 24 hours before it was picked up by Discovery Bay Wild Bird Rescue.

Cindy Daily, director of Discovery Bay Wild Bird Rescue, said 14 bald eagles have come through their rescue since January.

Most eagles are diagnosed with lead poisoning, common in the wild from human activity, she said. This bald eagle is believed to have been injured fighting another over territory.

Veterinarians worked to pin the radius and ulna of the bird’s right wing. Daily said the prognosis for this eagle is good, and they hope to release the bird of prey back into the wild once the wing is healed and the bird undergoes physical therapy to regain strength.

Daily said this rescue and many others would not be possible without the donation of veterinary care by Hadlock Veterinary Clinic, with whom they frequently work.
