Port Townsend will continue to waive late fees and penalties on utility bills and for businesses that are late in paying their business and occupational taxes.
In March, the council agreed to not collect late fees or assess penalties on late bills.
But with that forgiveness period set to expire June 30, the city council agreed at last week’s meeting to approve a new resolution that waives all late fees and penalties through Aug. 31.
The resolution also notes that the city will also not shut off the water for those who have not paid their utility bills in full.
Port Townsend will also restore utility service to those who have not fully paid any outstanding bills owed to the city.
That grace period will also run through Aug. 31.
City officials said the waivers are needed because Port Townsend businesses and residents are struggling due to closures prompted by the COVID-19 outbreak, and the city noted that many businesses have had to close their doors and furlough or lay off employees.
