Port Townsend Police responded to 130 calls for service between the Monday, Sept. 28 and Sunday, Oct. 4. Below are selected reports.

At 2:39 p.m. Sept. 28, police responded to the 200 block of Sims Way after receiving a report of a male shoplifter leaving a local business with a sleeping bag and a BB gun. Officers monitored traffic on the outskirts of town in an attempt to stop the suspect’s vehicle.

Officers later executed a search warrant of the suspect’s vehicle, discovering drug paraphernalia that included hypodermic needles and cans and torches.

At 9:56 a.m. Sept. 29, police received a report of a theft in the area of the fairgrounds.

A designer purse containing medications — including an opioid painkiller — cash and debit cards was reportedly stolen from the bed of a pickup truck parked in the area overnight.

At 11:07 a.m. Sept. 29, a caller reported being the victim of a vehicle prowl in the 1500 block of Hendricks Street. Taken from inside the vehicle were a flashlight, approximately $20 in change and a spring-loaded tool for breaking windows.

At 9:04 p.m. Sept. 29, a woman was reportedly seen laying in the road in the 600 block of Gise Street.

Officers contacted the subject, an elderly female who had fallen down.

Officers learned that the woman also believed that she had accidentally locked herself out of her home. Police were able to gain access to the woman’s home through a rear sliding door that was unlocked. Once inside, the officers helped the woman put away her groceries.

At 11:24 p.m. Sept. 29, police received a report of a man yelling and cursing loudly outside.

Officers located the subject based on a witness’ description. The man, known to police from previous interactions, was arrested on charges of harassment and drug offenses after police discovered the man was in possession of methamphetamine.

At 10:52 a.m. Sept. 30, a caller in the 2700 block of Jefferson Street reported a man appeared to be holding and spinning a rifle in a public parking area.

Upon arrival, officers located an individual who admitted to having a rifle in the trunk of his vehicle. He also noted that he had been examining and manipulating the rifle, but said he didn’t brandish it in a threatening manner.

Officers told the man he should be mindful of where he handles his firearms, as it can make others in the area uncomfortable. Police also added that because open carry of firearms in Washington is legal, no laws were broken.

Had the man leveled the muzzle of the firearm at anyone, or behaved in a threatening manner, this could have been considered “brandishing” the firearm.

At 11:38 a.m. Sept. 30, police responded to a report of a stolen package from a home in the 1600 block of 10th Street. The package was taken from the homeowner’s doorstep and the owner was concerned that the package contained their name and address. Officer took the report but were unable to locate the stolen item.

At 2:57 p.m. Sept. 30, police responded to a report that a woman had asked a person if she could use their phone for an emergency call.

When the woman gave back the phone, the victim later discovered that the phone was actually a non-functioning display phone from a retail store. The woman left the scene prior to the victim noticing the switch.

At 4:08 a.m. Oct. 1, officers received a report of a theft from an unlocked vehicle.

Included in the stolen items were a hiking chair, an ashtray filled with change, and a .22 caliber Ruger pistol.

A report was taken by the officers which included the serial number for the pistol, but there are no suspects at this time.

At 2:24 p.m. Oct. 3, police responded to a business in the 1400 block of Sims Way for two unwanted people.

According to the caller, one of the suspects was wearing a backpack, protruding from which appeared to be a machete. Another subject was riding around on an electric, four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle, knocking over displays in the business.

When officers arrived, they trespassed the subject with the machete and an admonishment was issued to the individual riding the electric vehicle.

At 6:18 p.m. Oct. 3, a caller reported a loud argument between a man and a woman in the 300 block of Sims Way.

The man was inside the vehicle and the woman was yelling at the man and pounding on the car.

Both people had departed by the time officers arrived on the scene.
