A 22-year-old Port Townsend man is facing a felony charge of second-degree burglary after he allegedly stole a Gorilla-brand cart from the Tides Inn.

Isaiah Steely Favors was arraigned in Jefferson County Superior Court on Friday, Feb. 24.

Favors entered a pleading of not guilty.

Prosecuting Attorney James Kennedy asked that bail be set at $2,500, but Judge Mindy Walker agreed with a defense request to set bail at $1,000 based on Favors’ indigency.

Favors was arrested Thursday, Feb. 16.

Police were called earlier in the day to the Tides Inn after a maintenance man discovered that someone had broken the latch to a fence for a storage area and took the Gorilla cart, valued at $450.

Later that day, an officer driving south on Landes Street noticed an RV that was parked at the Haines Place Park-and-Ride, with the cart sitting next to the vehicle.

When the officer stopped, he saw Favors standing next to the RV, according to court documents. Favors had a warrant for second-degree criminal trespassing, and he was put in handcuffs and arrested.

While in custody, Favors was asked about the Gorilla cart, according to a probable cause statement.

After an initial denial, Favors allegedly admitted to stealing the cart two days earlier from the storage area behind the inn.

While being taken to jail, Favors allegedly told the officer: “I can’t believe it’s a felony for a [expletive] cart.”

According to the probable cause statement, Favors again expressed disbelief that the theft of the cart was a felony crime and offered to return it.

“I should have never admitted it,” Favors told the officer, according to court documents.
