Mitchel Osborne and Melissa Bixby will be the featured artists in July at the Port Townsend Gallery.
Osborne is a professional photographer who has been a contributor to major editorial publications, international travel guides and magazines, and books.
Most of his photography career was spent in New Orleans, where he focused on editorial and travel photography.
After a move to Port Townsend, he left behind the steamboats of the Mississippi River to explore the beauty, craftsmanship, and preservation of wooden boats in the historic Victorian town.
In his current collection, Osborne presents photos that explore the fusion of colors, water, and boats. The exhibition includes new images from his previous and recent travels; images that display “a sense of place” and the individuality of destinations.
The July gallery show also includes his signature water reflection series of Wooden Boat Festival boats.
Bixby grew up in Alaska and has been influenced by the Pacific Ocean. The waters of the country’s last frontier sparked her obsession with sea creatures, a fascination that has continued since her days tide pooling in China Port Bay near Homer, Alaska to free diving in the Puget Sound.
Bixby uses the art of Batik, an ancient fabric-dyeing art form from Java, Indonesia, to create flowing water scenes and maritime creatures with an airy texture and fluid movement.
In Batik, wax is applied to cloth and Bixby then hand paints on cold water fabric dye in a process similar to watercolor. The wax is then removed by a dry cleaner to leave clean, crisp lines separating the bold, bright colors and defining the subject of the artwork.
The Port Townsend Gallery will feature her lively and expressive works that include the giant Pacific octopus, whales, seals, and jellyfish.
The artists will participate in the next Art Walk Saturday, from 5 to
8 p.m. July 1. Light refreshments will be served.
