New COVID-19 case in Jeff Co

Patient an asymptomatic child

Posted

Jefferson County health officials confirmed a new case of coronavirus on May 31.

The patient is a child who was tested at Jefferson Healthcare’s drive-through clinic prior to a scheduled surgery.

“These are cases we very much want to find, because they can lead us to others that could potentially spread throughout the community,” said Public Health Officer Tom Locke.

This is Jefferson County’s 31st case of coronavirus; there have been more than 1,700 tests conducted for COVID-19 in the county in the past three months.

Jefferson Healthcare recently ramped up testing. The hospital can process tests in a lab on site which allows physicians to do rapid testing for patients who are hospitalized as well as patients going in for surgeries or other medical procedures, according to Amy Yaley, Jefferson Healthcare’s communication director.

This is the first pediatric case in the county. The patient does not have any symptoms, according to Locke.

“We just started investigating it,” he said. “I don’t have many details yet.”

In Washington, there have been 21,702 diagnosed cases of coronavirus and there have been 1,118 deaths through June 1.
