Middle school wrestlers start season with energy

On Feb. 28, East Jefferson Middle School wrestlers traveled to Sequim to engage in their first competitive meet of the season. There were 65 matches wrestled by 30 EJ wrestlers, some grappling up to three times during the afternoon. The Rivals finished the evening with 18 wins and 47 losses.

“This was the first middle school competition for two-thirds of our team, which was a great introduction to the intense sport of wrestling,” said Coach Jim Wilcox. “The best part of the evening was seeing these kids have great attitudes and the encouragement and support they gave one another.”

Aiden Glenn had the most wins of the evening, going 3-0 with his competition. Dane Moore went 2-0, Chase Gardner went 2-0, and Layla Grimm finished with two wins.

“I think 65 matches in one night has set the bar for our team,” said Coach Ryan White. “The number of kids this season is once again higher than ever, and these kids are all showing that they want to learn. Last year we finished the season with three girls. Tonight we have eight who competed and we are hoping a couple more may be eligible next week to join this group.”

The next competition will take place on Wednesday, March 6 at Stevens Middle School in Port Angeles. On March 13, Port Townsend will host the only home event of the season at PTHS. Both events are scheduled to start wrestling at 4 p.m.
