I would like to thank The Leader for its clear and objective reporting on what took place at Pope Marine Park on Monday, Aug. 15th, and for accurately describing it as an anti-trans protest organized by anti-trans activists.
Amy Sousa and Julie Jaman have needlessly taken a matter that was already dealt with locally, and used it as a springboard in their pursuit of internet fame, putting a Port Townsend teenager in danger and doing harm to our community as a whole.
The central theme of their harassment — that trans women are actually men who want to gain access to female spaces in order to violate “real” women and girls — is not only atrociously untrue but has historically inspired hate crimes against trans women. Consider also that the speakers at Monday’s event included at least one person who openly blogs about their connection to the Proud Boys.
Sousa and Jaman have clearly demonstrated their ability to successfully organize large groups of people through social media platforms, and it is pathetic that they waste their efforts on seeking attention rather than seeking effective change and justice for all people.
Their crusade not only does harm to our community but undermines the cause they claim to be fighting for by coopting and weaponizing the issue of sexual assault and gender-based violence.
It is particularly ironic that while Jaman claims to stand for the protection of children against nefarious adults, she herself is an adult of 80 years who is leading a campaign of harassment against a young woman just entering adulthood.
Mayor Faber deserves recognition for his courageous and principled response to this situation, as does the city council for standing in solidarity with the trans community and its allies who form the vast majority of Port Townsend residents.
