Masks – right or responsibility?

Posted

We have this lethal, novel virus spreading across the globe like wildfire. We have no cure, no vaccine for months, possibly years. We know some people do not show symptoms but are contagious. We know of countries where everyone followed the guidelines are now having very few new cases, but in America we are still having thousands of new cases every day. We know wearing a mask and social distancing can dramatically slow the spread of the virus. It is mind-boggling and terrifying for me that there are still those who believe this pandemic is a hoax, or that wearing a mask or having their temperature scanned is against their rights.

I had to restock supplies yesterday. At one store there was only one employee wearing a mask, but he had it around his neck, so I doubt its effectiveness. Of 30 customers only myself and one other had one on. Few were social distancing. At another store, a customer was angrily calling the cashier a “COVID Nazi” because they have a no-cash policy to further protect their staff. He had plastic but was still outraged at the inconvenience.

We have seat belts laws to save lives. We have laws against drinking and texting while driving to keep people from killing others. Wearing a mask and social distancing is common sense. To not wear is not a right. It is selfish, irresponsible and sometimes deadly behavior.

Almost everyone is suffering through this pandemic, whether emotionally, financially or both. We all miss going out to eat, going to the movies, going to parties and getting hugs and spending time with our loved ones.

But this will not go away unless everyone does their part. Please wear a mask and social distance!
