Chimacum High School senior Reid Martin–the East Jefferson Rivals’ top singles tennis player– swept all three opponents in his round-robin bracket in the Nisqually League tournament on Thursday and Friday, October 26-27 at the University of Puget Sound.
Entering the league tournament as top seed, Martin began Thursday by beating Vashon’s best singles player, 6-1, 6-2. Later that day, Martin trounced Eatonville’s top player, 6-0, 6-0. On Friday, Martin finished strong by beating Life Christian’s #2 singles player, 6-1, 6-0.
On the strength of those victories, Martin will advance to compete as top seed in the District tournament at the Jupiter Tennis Center in Edgewood on November 2-3.
Rivals Coach Keith Johnson said Martin “dominated” his bracket at the league tourney. “All season he has been playing at a level above last year’s excellent performance.”
Johnson said the Rivals’ #2 singles player–homeschooled junior Spencer Fordham–lost “two close third-set tiebreakers 10-8” and “narrowly missed qualifying for district.”
Neither of the Rivals’ doubles teams advanced to districts. Johnson said, “The Barry brothers—Roscoe and Trevor—defeated an Annie Wright team 6-4, 6-1, advancing to a playoff match for a district entry,” but then “lost a tightly contested match to a Life Christian duo, 6-4. 6-4.” Meanwhile, Johnson said, “Peter Giddens and Evan Kraft ended their season with a 6-0, 6-4 loss to Eatonville’s best.”
