The Discovery Bay and Port Townsend Women’s Clubs have been in “full swing” this summer with weekly competitions, as Phase 2 restrictions allowed for golfing in foursomes, with social distancing. 

So far this year, the weather has been cooperating and participation has been picking up each week, according to group officials.

On June 4, Discovery Bay Women’s Golf Club celebrated Pat Burns’ 101st birthday. Thirteen members played “Bingo, Bango, Bongo,” whereby points were awarded to the first player on the green, the player who landed closest to the pin, and to whoever had a one-put.

“Guess who won?  Yep, the one and only Birthday Girl,” said Dee Sweeney. “Pat scored 11 points, whereas the best that the rest could do was a three-way tie for second place, with 9 points each.”

On June 16, at the Port Townsend Women’s 9-hole Golf Club, they played “Disaster!” - whereby one point is awarded for each of the following: out-of-bounds, in a bunker, missing a bunker shot, having three or more putts, hitting a tree or whiffing the ball. A par, however, erases all previous points and the player with the fewest points wins.

The winner was Lynn Bidlake with 3. Second was Katherine Buchanan with 5. Third was Barb Matter with 6.

On June 18, at Discovery Bay Golf Course, the women played ”Easy Peasy” with the winner having the best total net score for (gross minus handicap) on the easiest holes. 

Starla Audette won with a net score of 32.

Wanda Synnestvedt and Jane Guiltinan tied for second place with nets of 32.5.

On June 23, the game was “3s, 4s, 5s, and 6s,” whereby the player who had the most holes with those scores wins.

Linda Deal claimed victory with eight points. Tied for second place was Betty Gastfield and Matter with second points. Third was Bidlake with five.

On June 25, the women played a game of ”Criss-Cross” with the winner being the player with the best collective net score for each hole on the front nine vs the back nine. The winner was Guiltinan with a net score of 28.5, with Jane Peoples in second place with a net 29. 

On June 30, the game was “O.N.E.S,” whereby the scores were taken from those holes that begin with one of these letters (namely Holes 1, 6, 7, 8 and 9). 

The winner was Audette with a net score of 29. 

Tied for second was Deal and Bidlake, with net scores of 30, and third was Matter with 33.

On July 7, their game was “T’s and F’s,” counting the score on the holes beginning with those letters (2, 3, 4 and 5).

The winner was Matter. In second place was Buchanan, and Peoples and Deal tied for third.
