I, along with many others, looked on in horror at the images of children being separated from their parents at our southern border. I felt helpless in the wake of such a tragedy.
I’m hopeful, though, that the actions of Representative Derek Kilmer will have an impact. He co-sponsored the Humanitarian Standards for Individuals in Customs and Border Protection Custody Act (HR 3239), which would establish basic health and medical standards for people, including children, in custody, and the Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act (HR2415), which would end the private prisons and county jails to detain immigrants, set humane standards for detention facilities, and protect immigrant detainees from abuse.
It would also combat the administration’s shameful and abusive treatment of those who are searching for a safe haven to raise their families and engage in the economic and cultural life of our nation, just as my own family did a couple of generations ago.
