Doris Ida Loeschen, mother to Yvonne Hay and Robert Hay, grandmother to Aaron, Enya, Atticus, and Harvey, passed away suddenly the morning of 26 March in the memory unit of Sherwood Assisted Living in Sequim, Washington.

She was born 14 June 1943 in the shadow of the Second World War in eastern Berlin, the third of four sisters. She met and married her first husband, Hans Hay in Berlin. They shared a fascination with America and moved to the U.S. in 1970. They started their journey in Buffalo, New York and continued to move west ending up in a sleepy tourist town, Kona, on the Big Island of Hawaii.

When her marriage ended she entered Real Estate with determination to succeed as a single mother.

She later remarried a Texan, Curtis Espy, and lived in Texas before returning to Hawaii and then later relocating to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. Briefly they lived in Port Ludlow but then moved to Port Townsend where she truly settled down.

She was an avid gardener, and was active in the AL-ANON community where she was a much sought-after sponsor. She had a very active social circle and often went to dinner followed by a stop in Elevated Ice Cream of Port Townsend. She enjoyed the outdoors and often went hiking and camping in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Known for her determination, bordering on stubbornness, and support for charity and good causes. Doris will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Doris’s ashes were spread at La Push. Robert and Yvonne were in attendance.
